Approximation of Volume Data

Christian Rössl, Frank Zeilfelder.

Given are data points which sample a scalar functions and which are scattered in a volume (top left). These scattered data are approximated by smooth function. Here, a new type of trivariate spline is constructed, i.e. the approximation function is defined as piecewise cubic polynomials. The approximation only applies local computation and hence the solution of small systems making it suitable for the processing of large data sets. The visulatizations in the other pictures show isosurfaces of the spline with the color coded approximation error to the known test function.
