Interactive Rendering of Translucent Objects

Hendrik Lensch, Michael Goesele, Philippe Bekaert, Jan Kautz, Marcus A. Magnor, Jochen Lang.

A novel technique allows for rendering translucent objects at interactive rates with arbitrary incident illumination. Previous rendering techniques required up to several minutes to evaluate the reflected radiance depending on the incident illumination on every surface point. Precomputation of how energy impinging at one point is distributed to all other surface points at two different resolutions yields much faster evaluation. During rendering a local term (bottom left) and a global term (bottom center) are combined to the final result (bottom right). The top row shows the same back lit geometry with two different materials.
