Anatomically Based Human Hand Model

Irene Albrecht,

This hand model has an anatomical structure, including bones, muscles, and skin. Bones and skin surface are represented by triangle meshes. The physics-based hybrid muscle model consists of geometrical muscles which have an actual geometrical shape enabling them to bulge during contraction, and pseudo muscles responsible for rotation of the bones following mechanical laws. A mass-spring system connects skin, muscles, and bones. Animation of the model is controlled by muscle contraction values which the muscle model converts into movement of skin and bones. Resulting animations exhibit anatomically and physically correct finger movements and skin deformations. New hand models can be generated from photographs using a feature point based deformation technique.
