Practical Shadow Mapping
Thomas Annen,
Stefan Brabec, Hans-Peter Seidel.
Extending traditional shadow mapping by a light source view frustum
optimization process, the shadow quality can drastically be improved.
Instead of chosing near anf far clipping planes of the light source
frustum arbitraily, the algorithm computes a tight fitting frustum.
This way, the shadow map can be rendered at almost full resolution,
while concentrating only on those regions which are seen by the camera.
Thus, the benefit is closely related to the camera and light source
setup. The two images illustrate two camera setups, one is distant to
the objects, where only a small improvement is achieved, the otherone
shows a close up, where much better shadows are rendered.
