WisNetGrid: Knowledge Networks in the Grid

WisNetGrid is a project funded by the BMBF in cooperation with the German Grid initiative (D-Grid). A multitude of communities focusing on various aspects of research (linguistics, astrology, computer science, meteorology, ...) and business applications (logistics, ...) use the grid because of its computing power and data storage capacity. So far communities are mostly separated and work independently from each other. However, there are applications for which it is useful to exchange data between communities. In order to enable such interactions between communities, we need to create a search engine allowing users to search data provided by other communities. This means keeping track of a distributed index, mapping between different community custom metadata schemata and answering user queries on a federated and on a local level.
Additionally, often we are not interested in the actual text of source documents, but rather in the abstract information contained. In order to allow search on abstract information extracted from the source data of participating communities, WisNetGrid also aims to create a knowledge layer for grid communities by providing general purpose information extraction and management tools. Information extraction is the process of extracting information from natural language texts and converting it into a structured ontological format (e.g. RDF). With SOFIE and its extension PROSPERA our group has already developed such information extraction tools. The main focus within the WisNetGrid project is to adapt this framework to a grid based multilangual setting and to integrate it into the WisNetGrid architecture.
More information about the project and the participating institutions can be found at the WisNetGrid project webpage.
At the MPI the following people are involved in this project: PD Dr. Ralf Schenkel, Dr. Katja Hose and Steffen Metzger.
