General openings: PhD (student) positions / postdoc opportunities

The group 3D Video and Vision-based Graphics and the Computer Graphics Group at MPI are looking for PhD students (wiss. Mitarbeiter) in the areas of

Applicants should have a Master degree (or equivalent) in computer science or a related field and show an outstanding academic record. We further expect research experience in one or several of the following fields: 3D computer vision, computer graphics, motion capture, machine learning, physics or applied mathematics. Candidates should have solid programming experience (C/C++) and be familar with the typical software tools used in the community (MATLAB, OpenGL etc.). Finally, we expect the candidates to be fluent in both written and spoken English.

A PhD at MPI Informatik means spending 3-4 exciting years in a highly inspiring international environment with some of the world's leading researchers in computer science. Full funding is provided - for the duration of your PhD you are employed as a researcher (wiss. Mitarbeiter) at MPI. In case you are interested, please submit your complete application package including a CV, a list of publications, transcripts, and the contacts of at least two references via Email or mail to the address below.

Looking for a postdoc position ?

We encourage talented researchers who just completed their PhD and who are looking for postdoc positions in one of the above fields to get in touch with us. Candidates should have a PhD in computer science or a related field and have a high-quality publication record in one of the above fields. Please send your complete application package, including copies of degree certificates, transcripts, a CV, the contacts of at least two academic references, and, if available, a list of publicatins via mail or Email to the address below.

PhD (student) position in Optical Performance Capture and 3D Scene Reconstruction at MPI Informatik

Expected start date: as soon as possible, candidate selection is ongoing.

Supervisor: Christian Theobalt

The research group 3D Video and Vision-based Graphics and the Computer Graphics Group at the Max Planck Institut Informatik in Germany invite applications for a PhD position in Optical Performance Capture and 3D Scene Reconstruction. Performance Capture describes all technologies used to measure models of motion, shape, and appearance of dynamic real world scenes (in particular scenes with human actors) from optical sensor data. Performance capture has many applications in game and movie productions, human computer interaction, surveillance, and 3D video creation. Despite tremendous technological progress in recent years, the field is still in its early stage and many fundamental problems remain unsolved. For several years our group has worked on the forefront of performance capture technology. For example, we developed one of the first system to capture 3D videos of human actors from a handful of normal video cameras, and we proposed one of the first new methods to measure detailed dynamic shape, motion and appearance of actors in arbitrary clothing (such as a dress or a wide skirt).

An applicant for the position is expected to conduct further research in this area and attack some of the many open challenges in marker-less dynamic scene reconstruction. Applicants should have a Masters degree (or equivalent) in computer science or a related field and show an outstanding academic record. We further expect research experience in one or several of the following fields: 3D computer vision, computer graphics, motion capture, machine learning, physics or applied mathematics. Candidates should have profound programming experience in C and/or C++ and be familiar with standard software libraries/tools used in the field (OpenGL, MATLAB etc.). Finally, we expect the candidates to be fluent in both written and spoken English.

Important General Information for Applicants

I fully encourage applications from talented students who are passionate about a career in research. However, I regularly receive very unspecific PhD applications and CVs which lack a focus and a clear motivation. Please note that I only consider candidates who motivate very thoroughly and convincingly why working with me in my field of research is what they would really like to do. In addition to that an applicant should have an outstanding academic record and should be fluent in both written and spoken English. I also expect research experience in a related field of work, preferably documented by respective high quality publications. Finally, at least one of the following two conditions has to be fulfilled: 1) I know the applicant personally; 2) the applicant obtains recommendations from respected authorities in Computer Vision and/or Graphics or related fields.

Applications which fail to fulfill these requirements will most likely remain unanswered.
