Travel Information

We recommend:

  1. Bringing some Euros in cash. 
  2. Using Saarfahrplan to get route recommendations. 
    Saarfahrplan is often more accurate than Google Maps. There is also a Saarfahrplan mobile app, and tickets can be purchased directly in the app.
  3. Purchasing a Deutschlandticket. 
    It costs 63 EUR/month and gives access to buses, the tramway, and regional trains (e.g., RE2, RE3). Note: The Deutschlandticket is only available by subscription. Make sure to cancel the subscription by 10 August, 2026 so that you only pay for August. Please look here for more information.
  4. If you don't have a Deutschlandticket then:
    1. The fare for one trip Frankfurt-Saarbrücken is roughly 51 EUR. Groups of travelers can get discounts via the Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket.
    2. At registration, you will get a badge that gives you access to buses and Saarbahn (tramway) for the whole week. Before getting your badge, you can buy one-way tickets (~3 EUR), and daily tickets (~6 EUR). You can buy your ticket via the Saarfahrplan mobile app. Tickets can also be bought from the bus driver on board the bus. At the Saarbahn, single tickets can be bought from ticket vending machines at Saarbahn stations or on board the trains. 

Traveling to Saarbrücken

From Frankfurt Airport by train: Go to https://www.bahn.de/ to check the connections between Frankfurt(M) Flughafen and Saarbrücken Hbf. We recommend taking the regional connection RE 3 (direct if possible), which runs every few hours. You can buy a ticket online or at the counter.

There are also connections from the Luxembourg, Paris and Saarbrücken airports.

From Saarbrücken main train station (Saarbrücken Hauptbahnhof) to hotels

From the train station to your hotel you can use public transport: Buses and the “Saarbahn” (tram). 

You can find route suggestions on the saarfahrplan.de website or in their app.

  • The Hotel B&B Saarbrücken is located directly at the main train station.
  • For Hotel Madeleine, you take the tramway S1 with destination "Sarreguemines", "Brebach", or "Kleinblittersdorf" and get off at the stop "Johanneskirche" (two stops). You can also walk (15 minutes).
  • For the Hotel Leidinger, you take the tramway S1 with destination "Sarreguemines", "Brebach", or "Kleinblittersdorf" and get off at the stop "Landwehrplatz". (three stops).
  • For the Hotel Motel One, you take the tramway S1 with destination "Sarreguemines", "Brebach", or "Kleinblittersdorf" and get off at the stop "Johanneskirche" (two stops), and walk from there (about 7 minutes).
  • The Hotel Premier Inn is located at the main train station.
  • For the Hotel Weller, you take bus 124 with destination "Universität Busterminal" and get off at the stop "An der Trift" (five stops). On Sunday, bus 124 does not operate. You can travel either to Preußenstr. by Bus 102 (seven stop), and walk from there (about 7 minutes), or you may check other options here: www.saarbahn.de.
  • For the Hotel Holiday Inn Express, you take the tramway S1 with destination "Lebach", "Siedlerheim", or "Riegelsberg Süd" and get off at the stop "Trierer Str." (one stop). You can also walk (10 minutes).
  • For the Youth Hostel, you take bus 124 with destination "Universität Busterminal" and get off at the stop "Prinzenweiher/DJH" (six stops). On Sunday, bus 124 does not operate. You can travel either to Ilseplatz by Bus 102 (11th stop), and walk from there (about 7 minutes), or you may check other options here: www.saarbahn.de (von: Saarbrücken Hbf, nach: Saarbrücken, Europa Jugendherberge).

Getting to the MPI-Inf and back

All buses to campus will have "Universität" as part of their destination sign. You get off the bus at the stop "Universität Mensa". The MPI building is located on the left side a bit further down the street (Building number E1.4). You can also look at the map below. On the way back you depart from the same bus stop (other side of the road).

  • From the main train station (Hotel B&B Saarbrücken and Hotel Premier Inn are located there), take bus 124 with destination "Universität Busterminal" and get off at the stop "Universität Mensa" (12 stops). On the way back, the destination is "Betriebsbahnhof".
  • From the city center (Hotel Madeleine, Hotel Leidinger and Hotel Motel One are located here) several buses to campus (stop "Universität Mensa") start at the bus stop "Rathaus": bus 101 with destination "Dudweiler Dudoplatz" (10 stops), bus 102 with destination "Dudweiler Dudoplatz" (13 stops), and bus 109 with destination "Universität Busterminal " (13 stops). On the way back to the city center you get off the bus at the bus stop "Johanneskirche". The destinations are "Füllengarten Siedlung" for bus 101, "Altenkessel Talstrasse" for bus 102, and "Habsterdick" for bus 109.
  • From the Youth Hostel (bus stop "Prinzenweiher/DJH"), you enter the bus at the same stop you left when coming from the train station and go on to "Universität Mensa" taking bus 101 with destination "Dudweiler Dudoplatz", bus 124 with destination "Universität Busterminal". On the way back, the destinations are "Füllengarten Siedlung" for bus 101, and "Betriebsbahnhof" for bus 124.
  • From the Hotel Weller (bus stop "An der Trift"), you use exactly the same options (enter/exit one stop earlier).
