Services

The International Office offers several services and assists you in planning and organizing your stay at MPI. The services are available for people joining MPI and for MPI's visitors.

More detailed information is provided on the International Office Intranet. You will be given the access code after you have contacted your department's secretariat, the IMPRS secretariat or the International Office.

Visa application

There are different types of visa depending on the purpose and the period of your stay at our institute. Please see the website of the German Federal Foreign Office  (giving addresses of German embassies in your home country and describing the visa application process) and the brochure "Rights of residence for researchers from non-EU countries in Germany" with a detailed overview of the different visa types.

If you need a visa, please contact the German Embassy in your home country to make sure what kind of visa you need. Please check the legal regulations regarding families, spouse joining, etc. carefully.

Then contact your department's secretariat and provide the secretariat with your postal address and a copy of your passport. The secretary will provide you with the invitation letter necessary for the visa application.

Apply for a visaat the German embassy in your home country. Please allow several weeks for your visa to be processed.

Accommodation

You can rent furnished flats through our International Office for a short tenancy period until you find your own apartment. Your stay in our flats should not exceed two months. For more information, contact the International Office (int-office@mpi-klsb.mpg.de). 

German health insurance

You need health coverage during your stay in Germany.  EU nationals who have a valid EHIC card should talk to their health insurer to make sure that the coverage is sufficient while in Germany. EU nationals without a valid EHIC card and non EU nationals have to get health insurance coverage in Germany. We will be glad to assist you.

German and English language courses

German and English language courses for beginners and advanced learners are offered by our institute. They are free of charge (also for your spouse) and meet twice a week for 90 minutes. Kindergartens/Nurseries

There are many facilities available for families with children in Saarbrücken. There are child care options for children starting at the age of 8 weeks and for children starting at the age of 3 years. We can help you find the right care for your child.
