Please read the following very short Mini-FAQ to ease your start at Max-Planck-Institut for Informatics (MPI-INF)

2. First things first: Change your initial password

Please change your initial password before your first login here:

Please note: Any service (ssh, email, intranet, ...) will only be accessible if you have changed your initial password.

3. Connecting to the institute from the outside world

Please use:

  • ssh

with your Unix login to connect to the unix machine:

  • contact.mpi-inf.mpg.de

from the outside.

4. Accessing the Intranet

Please use the following URL to connect to the Intranet-Server worldwide:

5. Reading email worldwide

5.1 IMAP mailbox (default)

Please configure your favorite client (e.g. Thunderbird is recommended for all platforms) to connect to the server:

  • mail.mpi-inf.mpg.de (default)

Please use the secure port 993 to talk to the IMAP server (the insecure IMAP port 143 will not work!).

5.2 HCL Notes Client based mailbox on Windows, MacOS and Linux

These accounts need to be setup upon request.

In order to get full access to all HCL Notes/Domino groupware features, we encourage you to use your Notes client on whatever platform you prefer.
Please read this documentation on how to set up the client:

5.3 Web

Visit the intranet entry page. There is link pointing to your web mailbox. Depending on the server you are using, this is either for Unix/IMAP:

or HCL Notes/Domino based mailboxes:

Please note: HCL Notes Mailboxes can not be used with Thunderbird or Apple Mail. They need to be used using the Notes client or a web browser.
